Naples. Below the Clouds.

Naples is home to a thousand churches and worships two deities, one of them Diego Armando Maradona. Since 1984, the Argentine has held an ever-present status in a city with a 2,800-year history. Looming above Naples is another volatile icon: Vesuvius, which wiped out the nearby Roman settlements of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae in AD 79.

Founded by the Greeks, ruled and remade by Romans, Byzantines, Normans, French, and Spanish, Naples remains an intoxicating blend of chaos, noise, high culture, and art. In 1606, the Baroque painter Caravaggio fled to Naples as a fugitive from Rome after killing a man in a duel. Its streets continue to carry the great painter’s instinct for light and darkness, sin and sinners, the sacred and the profane.
