Georgia

The Crossroads of Europe and Asia

Captured in October, 2023

Georgia’s location at the intersection between Europe and Asia has made it a melting pot of cultures, religions, and empires throughout history, from the Persians and Romans to the Mongols and Ottomans. Part of the Caucasus, a transcontinental region bridging the Black and Caspian Seas, Georgia is one of the oldest wine producers in the world, tracing its heritage as far back as 6000 BC. To its north, it shares its border with Russia under whose empire it used to belong until it achieved independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved. Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, houses around a third of Georgia’s 3.7 million population. The city blends old and new, with the Old Town, ‘Avtandilis Khevi’, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and capturing the essence of the city’s rich history.
